Help Teach for America Alumnus Win $10,000 to Support FREE TUTORING for At-Risk Youth

Of the thousands of ideas listed on the Ideablob website, Teach for America Alumnus, Di Yonna Mitchell, is currently in 3rd place for the online entrepreneurship competition, which may provide funds to support her free tutoring program for at-risk youth.  Please vote online BEFORE Monday, September 22, 2008 at http://www.ideablob.com/ideas/2702-Free-Tutoring-for-At-Risk-Youth.  If the program receives either 1st or 2nd place by September 21, it will earn a spot in the finals to compete for $10,000.  The program has already secured a contract with the Georgia Department of Education to provide free tutoring to thousands of eligible youth; however, funding is still needed for books, instructional material, marketing, and many other operational supplies.

Make a difference in the lives of youth by supporting the mission BEFORE September 22, 2008.  Please forward this information to other educators, leaders, and individuals whom you believe would be willing to support this cause.  Visit http://www.ideablob.com/ideas/2702-Free-Tutoring-for-At-Risk-Youth and vote! Your support is greatly appreciated.

Update and counterpoint on HB 881

The Senate Ed committee is set to vote on 881 Tuesday, March 4, FYI. The meeting is at 3 in room 307. They postponed their original vote to push some bills in advance of crossover day.

Now that I work with the Man (i.e. the people who review charter petitions in APS), it's important for us all to notice the details (and the devil therein) in legislation like this. Yes, a number of great charter applications did get turned down in the Atlanta metro area last year, but even more BAD charter applications got turned down. Like, we're seriously working with a group right now who are real estate developers who have owned this church facility for a few years, the neighborhood association turned them down when they wanted to turn it into condos two years ago and now their solution is to open a charter school in the building. Seriously.

Support for GA HB-881

Last year,  several alumni and others in Atlanta wrote smart, compelling charters for new schools in the metro-Atlanta area. One of my personal friends even joined the board of one proposed school. We were all completely disheartened when they were not approved - the proposals were sound, the goals and support amazing - but the districts ultimately had the power to dismiss them, and did...despite compelling evidence of the need for the schools and the impressive qualifications of those working to make them happen.

Legislative work is underway to change this process.
